The Department of Health introduced the Friends and Family Test across all hospitals across the country in 2013 for inpatient, maternity services and in A&E, with day cases and outpatients included later in 2014, and primary care and mental health from early 2015.
It is a simple question asked of each patient following their treatment or stay in hospital, asking if they would recommend the Trust to their friends and family needing similar treatment or care.
Patients can rate their recommendation on a scale of six options, ranging from 'extremely likely' to 'extremely unlikely' and can explain their answer – this importantly gives services the opportunity to make improvements.
