Equality and Diversity

What is Equality and Diversity?

Equality is a legal principle to eliminate discrimination and promote equality of opportunity to people and groups. The Equality Act 2010 defines this protection based on protected characteristics. These are: race, sex, gender identity, age, sexual orientation, religion or belief, marriage and civil partnership and pregnancy and maternity.

We define diversity as the valuing of our individual differences and talents, and creating a culture where everyone can participate, thrive and contribute. Equality and diversity form the basis of our values and how we operate as an organisation.

Equality is relevant to everyone, not just certain groups of people. Everybody is protected under the Equality Act 2010 from discrimination or harassment, if this treatment is because of a protected characteristic.

Public Sector Equality Duty

We are required to produce evidence of how we have met our Public Sector Equality Duty on an annual basis.  Reports are listed below.

NHS Rotherham CCG Objectives

Equality and Diversity is central to the work of NHS Rotherham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to ensure there is equality of access and treatment within the services that are commissioned. The promotion of equality, diversity and human rights is central to the NHS Constitution and your life, your health and other national drives to reduce health inequalities and increase the health and well-being of the population. NHS Rotherham CCG is committed to embedding equality and diversity values into its policies, procedures, employment and commissioning processes that secure health and social care for people.

We have used the refreshed NHS Equality Delivery System (EDS 2) to develop and prepare our four equality objectives which are:

  • Have effective governance to improve Equality, Diversity and Human Rights performance through the Equality Delivery System and improve the use of equality analysis data in our commissioning cycle

  • Build Strong relationships with diverse groups and communities to understand their needs, priorities and experiences in order to inform commissioning.

  • Develop an inclusive working culture which values diversity and supports staff to feel confident to challenge any harassment, bullying or perceived victimisation.

  • Consistency of equality approach across NHS Rotherham CCG in respect of equality leadership, staff empowerment and access to development opportunities.

NHS Rotherham CCG Equality Objectives were refreshed in December 2018. The progress we have made towards meeting the requirements of the general equality duty can be seen in our Public Sector Equality Duty Annual Reports above.
